What do People want more than Sex and Money?

What do people want more than sex and money?

Is it a car, a vacation, a day of golf, good health or
something else?

Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics once said,
"There are two things people want more than sex and
money.....recognition and praise."

Frequently, we’re told that the one motivating factor at the
top of most employee lists is "appreciation for a job well
done". In staff performance reviews, it is the one thing
requested more than money.

Why don't more managers, owners, other employees (and just
regular people we see every day!) show appreciation? Some
people say they don't know how to show it, they don't know
what words to use and how and when to say the words. Others
wonder if they should show appreciation only for exceptional
work or if they should also show appreciation for simply
doing the job required.

Watch out for something to praise - a task completed to a
high standard, a task achieved faster than expected, someone
looking particularly smart today or someone greeting a
customer enthusiastically and personally or maybe
remembering a customer's name.

One of the biggest errors made by a manager is not to show
appreciation for a good job, well done. Showing appreciation
allows you to invest in your team - without spending money.

Appreciation doesn't need to be financially costly. It could
be a coffee and a cookie or it could be a quick hand-written
note. The important thing for managers to realize is that
people need appreciation to give of their best.

Being able to motivate your team successfully begins with
wanting the best for people. If you care, you’ll talk to
them and know about what interests them and what are their
ambitions. You’ll discover what motivates them.

Tom Peters suggests that people need to feel they are part
of a winning team and at the same time, to be a star in
their own right.

Transform your team into Champions. Here are the 7 C's of a
Championship Crew.

Contribution - involve your team in policies and decisions
Communication - keep everyone informed
Celebration - of both individual and team performance
Challenge - set realistic and challenging goals
Correction - manage errors and poor performance
Capital - give your team the tools to succeed
Confidence - believe in your people
- they are the Champions!

How about you? Before you can inspire others to extend
themselves, you need to develop your own motivation.
Have you got clear, specific, realistic and achievable goals
yourself - personal goals as well as those given to you by
your managers?

Seeing progress towards our goals gives us a sense of
achievement and helps revive our motivation.

Motivate yourself! Appreciate and motivate your team!
Achieve success!
